Being in the later months of pregnancy doesn’t necessarily mean you need to cover your body in tent-sized fabrics and lose all semblance of sartorial nous. In fact, pregnancy offers a unique opportunity to experiment with your look in new ways – and because you’ll be buying plenty of maternity clothes, you can hop on some of the latest trends along the way.
Here are some of the most chic and stylish trends that you can adapt to your maternity wear for Spring / Summer 2017.
Ultra-feminine ruffles and frills have been huge on the catwalks this season, and now they’ve hit the shops just in time for spring. Frills can help you play with your proportions, which is ideal when you’re experimenting with balancing out your growing tummy. Consider investing in a light top with ruffles at the shoulder, or play with voluminous ruffled sleeves to attain this chic, up-to-date look.
The old fashion advice goes that horizontal stripes aren’t flattering. This trend says otherwise! We’ve seen stripes on the catwalks of Proenza Schouler and Mulberry, and the great news is, there’s a multitude of options out there to choose from. From subtle stripes on knitwear, to gorgeous all-over striped jumpsuits that are fun and flirty. We love the idea of a light knit, super-stretchy striped bodycon dress draped over a growing bump – it’s comfortable and stylish all in one.
Florals always come into style during spring as a celebration of the season – but this year’s florals have a slight twist. Think head-to-toe florals in an almost wallpaper-esque style, with repeating patterns and bold colours. If you’re not confident enough to pull off a head-to-toe look, invest in some comfortable palazzo trousers in a vibrant print, then pair with a plain vest-top or light blouse.
This trend harks back to the 90s and is the perfect one to showcase your fashion credentials while dressing your bump in total comfort. This season we’ve seen must-have tops from Gucci and Versace emblazoned with their own logos, and we love the slogan knitwear from brand-of-the-moment Bella Freud. The marl grey jumper emblazoned with the word ‘HER’ is our favourite; it exemplifies the power of femininity and motherhood (and will look fabulous with your most comfortable maternity jeans).
Many pregnant women love nothing more than slipping into their comfortable dressing gown when they get home each day. Great news: one of the biggest trends for spring this year is wrap coats and luxe jackets that feel exactly like your favourite robe! Think silky, satiny fabrics in dusky pink and elegant white – they’re also super-flattering at any stage of your pregnancy, so snap one up if you’re hitting your third trimester this season.
